In a work that will remind some of a modern incarnation of The Anti-Federalist Papers, author Mark Moore, originally under the pen name Achbani but now for the first time in his own name, makes a compelling case that the Founders of the United States intended a much more decentralized government than we now have, and that decentralization of power is essential to maintaining liberty. Localism maintains there are thirteen doorways through which state power is consolidated and liberty lost. The philosophy suggests that each of the thirteen must be kept shut in order for liberty to be sustained. Much of the book contains specific necessary measures in order to keep political power diffused and therefore in reach of the citizens. One of the more intriguing aspects of the philosophy is its potential to unite limited-government conservatives and libertarians together against centralizers of all stripes. A blueprint forward.

Localism a Philosophy of Government Mark M Moore 9780692257104 Books

A treatise structured on seven pillars on which localism is claimed to rest.

Each pillar is covered in turn, where pillar four - lessons from history - is given extra attention. In it, seven lessons from history are provided, with its fourth lesson - the pinnacle of the well-structured book- offering a summary of seven principles of safe money and banking (in my opinion the highlight of the book). To stretch the use of number seven even further, within the seven principles is a reference to the seven characteristics if what is to be considered money.

The author is somewhat obsessed with number seven and also uses the number in devising a formula for how to charge a county a fee upon secessing from its state.

Finally, in discussing well-governed small states, number seven not surprisingly appears a couple of times.

The slight obsession with number seven does not diminish the value of the book, which provides a well-structured coverage of the balance between local and central control and offers a number of ingenious solutions for the current ills of a bloated centrally-governed United States.

Although the focus is on the US political system, with a number of states gathered under a nation, there are many similarities between the ills of the US and the ills of the EU.

This is proving to be a very useful text for Home Schooling and priced right so each student can have one and i use it as a precursor to Government Studies, as it crosses over for Philosophy, Critical thinking, and and as a tool to demonstrate how to compare and contrast Subject Matter. Using this prior to Civics has enabled the student to readily see and question the way we conduct business with Government and to compare and contrast modern constitutional interpretations with Contextual Constitutionalism theory.
That's what I kept saying as I read this book. It seemed to put all the pieces together for me about why the constant "liberal vs. conservative" debate is not addressing the real issue of the centralization of power that is robbing all of us of our God-given liberties. Localism is a philosophy proven right by history, and is closest to the intention of the founders of this country. This book does not just point out the overall problems but offers a hopeful, peaceful solution that makes so much sense that you wonder why it has not been articulated this well before. Achbani is extremely articulate and readable. I could not put the book down, and hated to see it end. I read it slowly in a few hours. It is very deep and profound and yet something all of us can relate to. This book is crucial to understanding our times. If you can buy only one book this year, make it this one. It is far more valuable than its low price, and far more valuable than any of the other political writers of our time.
A very good book I have given a copy to my state rep and state senator
Not only is this how government should work, but Mark covers how to transition to it.
Easy read! Great ideas! Wish they'd take hold.
Given the clearly demonstrable reality that further centralization of power in the hands of a few always leads to mass tyranny, poverty, suffering, and death for the most numbers of people - it would seem that the opposite of this direction would lead to the least amount said negativity.

ie the opposition to Globalism is clearly Localism.

Because I had already come to that conclusion, when I saw the title of this book and read the reviews it quickly went to the top of my essential reading list.

The author did it justice. The ideas and concepts he covered are covered well - and they need to be high on the list of topics on the table if there is any hope of reconstructing a nation of freedom after the collapse of empire.

In my opinion this is an essential and important work that deserves far more attention than it has had so far.

note also highly recommended for many of the same reasons, "The Golden Mean" - Nelson Hultberg - http//bit.ly/1tkQmbN
Localism is a thought-provoking work. It provides alternatives to today's rote and thoughtless concepts of government. It brings the original vision of our Founders into a modern setting and asks provoking questions while providing alternative methodologies to the central planning model which has infected our entire country.

One need not agree with everything that the author suggests, but considering the dire condition of our nation from federal to the local level, it's time that we start asking different questions.

There are many who argue that our nation has degenerated into fascism and fraud as a way of life. Certainly truth appears to be in short supply.

I recommend this book not because it supplies answers with which everyone will agree, but rather because it asks questions that everyone should consider.
