LOOKING FOR THE PAST…
Ellie Connor is a biographer with a special talent for piecing together fragments of the past. Her latest project, though, promises to be her most challenging–and personal. Not only is she researching the life of a blues singer who disappeared mysteriously forty years ago, but Ellie is also trying to find the truth about the parents she never knew. The love child of a restless woman who died young and an anonymous father, Ellie has little to go on but a faded postcard her mother sent from a small East Texas town–the hometown of her latest subject.
COULD MEAN FINDING HER FUTURE
It is there that Ellie meets Blue Reynard, a man with deep roots and wide connections who may help her find answers. With a piercing gaze and cool grin, Blue is as sultry and seductive as the Southern night air. Beneath his charming surface, however, lies a soul damaged by loss. Despite her better judgment, Ellie finds herself irresistibly drawn to Blue’s passion–and his pain. But Ellie’s been lured by sweet talk and hot kisses before. How can she possibly stay with Blue when every instinct tells her to run?

In the Midnight Rain eBook Barbara Samuel Ruth Wind
I read this story before I began doing reviews, and because I'm going through all of this author's work, I decided to re-read it. It's the story about the h, who comes to a small southern town to do a biography on a missing woman. The woman was a well known blues singer and it's hard to believe that she vanished without a trace. The H is a botanist (or something like that), a widower and he also loves the blues. The main characters "met" in a blues newsgroup on the internet but had no idea what each other was like in reality. When they meet the H is disillusioned, drinks too much is gorgeous and a bit of a womaniser. The h isn't a beauty and has a few issues because she never knew her father and her mother died in an unfortunate way after abandoning her to her mother to raise. The story is deep and well drawn. The background mysteries about the missing blues singer and the h's origins, are intriguing. This was a very good read even though it's a bit dated iro the technology or lack thereof.Product details

In the Midnight Rain eBook Barbara Samuel Ruth Wind Reviews
Wow! I wish that I could give this book ten stars. Out of the 378 books that I have reviewed for , I have written directly to the author only three times with my compliments; this book was the third one. I was so emotionally charged when I finished reading this book that I had to get a drink (and a snack) before I was calm enough to write a review.
Ellie was a fascinating woman and I loved the way I felt that I really got to know her; if I really could meet her, I'd want her to be my friend. I especially liked the fact that she was NOT beautiful but Blue, who was extremely handsome, saw more and more beauty in her once he started to fall in love with her. My husband of 29 years, like Blue, said that I wasn't his type, right up until he realized that he loved me, so I got a real kick out of Blue's original assessment of Ellie.
This is a truly outstanding book and I really LOVED reading it! I'm not surprised that Barbara Samuel won so many awards for her books as she is an exceptionally fine writer who has a real gift for making people and scenes come to vibrant life in one's mind. My only real difficulty that I have with her books is choosing which one to read next. So, I'll make it easy for you and tell you that you should read this one. I can't recommend it highly enough. Happy reading!
I received this book free from and am voluntarily writing a review. This is the type of book you live within the pages and are shell shocked to read the last word and are dumped back into the reality of the real world and every day life. Ellie is a Blues Biographer and is currently in Gideon trying to put the pieces together of Mabel Beauvais a blues singer in the early 1940's that disappeared at the height of her career. She is also interested in seeing if she can figure out who her own father is. She met Dr. Lawrence(Blue) Reynard a year ago on a blues discussion website and has been in daily contact with him. He has invited her to stay at the cottage on his property while researching her book. When Ellie pulls up to Blue's property and meets him she knows she will fall in love with him and he will break her heart.
Barbara Samuel is a favorite of mine, but I have to be "up" for her stories. Her characters are always intense, passionate, complex people who carry loads of heavy baggage and deep wounds. If there's one message to this plot, it's the wounding power of passion and the healing power of selfless love.
Ellie and "Blue" are as intense, as passionate, as complex as any of Samuel's characters, but they aren't the only ones whose stories are told here. Secondary characters are also developed and an unexpected mystery is resolved with an even more unexpected ending. The stories are sometimes tear-jerking because they deal with the darker corners of the human heart, but they also shine hope and optimism on the power of that heart to heal and love again. If you're up for a tender-passionate, tragic-hopeful, intense roller-coaster of a ride, I recommend this one highly.
I stated doing 're-read for all the books I still had in my library. It was a couple of years ago when I read this. When I started the book I didn't remember the content which actually made reading it the second time better. The author knows how to tell a story. It wasn't your average storyline for romance novels. It was the type of story you needed to read to the end in order to see or feel ....... It was the end.
A grand ending. Emotionally strong ending. You're happily ever after....of course.
But the writer gave emotion throughout the story. I laughed and cried with the characters. I felt heart ache and happiness. I felt scared and relieve in all the right places in this novel. Great writing. I have a collection set in my 're-Read' . That's where I'm saving it.
I'll enjoy it the 3rd time I open it's pages and become involved in the heart of the story.
The author has written several novels. Going to explore more.
This story is so complex, but it holds your attention all the way through. The setting of this story originaly takes place during the Vietnam war, and here it is now 30 some odd years later, when Ellie is contracted to write a book about a jazz singer who mysterious disappears right after having one of the most successful nights of her career.
Through the exploring and digging up missing pieces of Mabel's short life and of the many secrets still untold, Ellie unexpectedly finds out some of her own. I especially loved the interaction between all of the characters, which felt so real. And all of the secondary characters were just as intriguing as the key players of this story. BTW- I would have never expected the story to unfold like it did. Never. I was just as surprised as many of you probably were at the outcome of this story. I thoroughly enjoyed that part.
Something that bothered me though, was the very end. I don't know if all of the story didn't download to my device, or if the author intensionally left us a teaser. Either way, it was a great story.
